Mysterio
Real name: Quentin Beck
Voiced by: Xander Berkeley
First appearance: Persona (as Quentin Beck), Blueprints (as Mysterio)
A special effects technician, Quentin Beck served the international criminal known as the Chameleon in return for a hefty sum of money. Working alongside fellow accomplice Phineas Mason, Beck strived to help make the Chameleon’s every impersonation perfect.
After being thwarted in his attempt to steal the Symbiote from the ESU lab by Spider-Man and the Black Cat, Chameleon set out to frame Spider-Man for various robberies, and Beck and Mason helped Chameleon look the part by providing him with the technology he would need to pass himself off as Spider-Man, including his own brand of ‘web-fluid’, stilts to make him appear agile, and suction cups to enable him to stick to walls.
When the trio attempted to pull a heist on a boat that was host to a party held by the mayor, they hit an unexpected set-back – the real Spider-Man (in his new black costume) had also crashed the party and was taking the opportunity to prove that he wasn’t the one who had turned to crime. Beck was able to create a distraction that allowed the group to escape outside, but Black Cat promptly apprehended Chameleon’s two partners and made short work of them. Of the group, Chameleon was the only one who managed to escape.
Later, New York City was terrorised by Mysterio, a would-be sorcerer intent on ridding the world of technology and claiming that its presence was corrupting the human spirit. Mysterio used a myriad of tricks to fend off those who tried to stop him, including illusions of magical beasts and colourless, odourless gases to take out anyone in his way. Spider-Man learnt the hard way that Mysterio’s surprises were not just limited to illusions when he first went up against him, and feared that Mysterio was the real deal.
During a run-in with the illusionist at Oscorp, he learnt of the magician’s mechanical devices and managed to follow him back to his warehouse lair for a showdown. Using his spider sense to distinguish between reality and fiction, Spidey thwarted everything that came his way, including an army of robot Mysterios. Snatching Mysterio’s remote control glove from him, the web-slinger disarmed him, leaving Mysterio with no other option but to reveal himself to be Quentin Beck; Beck was frustrated to find that Spider-Man didn’t remember him, and fumed over this as Spider-Man restrained him.
After Spider-Man and the police had left, the real Mysterio emerged from the shadows along with the Tinkerer, who scolded him for using a robot duplicate instead of one that could have had the appearance of another person. Beck replied that he wasn’t about to let someone else take credit for his work, leaving Tinkerer to exclaim, “Actors!”. Tinkerer then rang the mastermind behind Mysterio’s actions, a criminal known only as the Master Planner; he reassured him that all of the stolen technology was still in their possession and hidden.
Mysterio joined the ranks of the Sinister Six on Christmas Eve in a bid to kill Spider-Man once and for all. The group attacked in pairs, with Mysterio and Kraven the Hunter ambushing Spider-Man last. The fight concluded in a shopping mall, where one of Mysterio’s robot duplicates exploded and Kraven was caught in the blast. Spider-Man captured Mysterio moments later, and Mysterio appeared to be the only member of the Six to be sent to jail…
In reality, the jailed Mysterio turned out to be yet another robot. At one point, this android was interviewed by Ned Lee about the possibility of Peter Parker being Spider-Man. It wasn’t until Spider-Man found himself trapped inside the Vault by the Green Goblin that the truth was revealed, and the robot helped Silvermane and the Enforcers attack Spider-Man. However, the robot was destroyed when Spidey tossed it in the way of one of Molten Man’s blasts, and the whereabouts of the real Mysterio are unknown.
